Zoho People is part of Zoho’s full suite of applications for small and medium businesses. We’ve rated it as a solid option for your shortlist.

Zoho People is a basic HR application for small and medium businesses. It covers Employee Self-Service, Employee Information, Leave, HR Admin and Automated Workflow - basically, it covers managing your employee records, time/attendance and leave.

Before you choose Zoho People, here are the key things you need to know.

First, the functionality of Zoho People includes the nuts-and-bolts basics you need. It’s designed to work out of the box - which is good if you don’t need too much customisation or complexity. One area we’ve found Zoho is different is their focus on breadth of functionality. You may find that other vendors focus on growing the depth and complexity of their HR offering, whereas we’ve found that Zoho are actively expanding their entire suite to cover far more than just HR.

Secondly, Zoho is a true subscription service. It’s easy to get your data in and out, so it’s easy to try it out, turn it on when you like, and turn it off when you like. You pay pay per-user-per-month.

Third, make sure you look at Zoho along with all of the other Zoho apps. They provide a recruitment application, plus apps for pretty much all other areas of your business (collaboration, productivity, CRM, accounting, invoicing, etc.)

Fourth, security is good, at levels well beyond the reach of most small and medium businesses. We would like to see Zoho start publishing information about independent security certification (such as ISO27001) like some of their larger competitors do.

I recommend Zoho for small and medium businesses who are looking for an integrated suite to run their entire business (HR, CRM, Accounting, Email, Invoicing, etc.)
