Confusingly, Microsoft have named multiple different products “Microsoft Dynamics” - Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft Dynamics AX, Microsoft Dynamics CRM and more.
Microsoft Dynamics GP is small business software that is designed to run your whole business (ERP or Enterprise Resource Planning). It is designed to work straight out of the box, covering your business finances, manufacturing, supply chain, IT, services, human resources, and with reporting and analytics.
Before you choose Microsoft Dynamics GP, here are the key things you need to know.
First, it is a popular, well-supported solution which makes it good for finding a partner. You are likely to need professional assistance in implementing an ERP solution, and Microsoft have a very large network of partners worldwide. Choose your partner carefully, as their assistance will be critical in setting up Microsoft Dynamics GP.
Second, Microsoft Dynamics GP is designed to work out-of-the box. If you’re looking for a more customisable solution - try Microsoft Dynamics NAV which is more configurable, or many of the other alternatives.
Third, have a look at hosted options. If you are implementing a new ERP solution, I recommend you explore cloud or hosted options, which will dramatically reduce the IT effort you need to spend.
Finally, make sure you consider alternatives before engaging with a partner (who may be biased). Get independent advice, and look at the market. If you are considering Microsoft Dynamics GP, I also recommend SAP, who offer an excellent variety of small business ERP solutions.
