Review of Microsoft Office 365

March, 2013

Rating: 5/5

In a word, Microsoft Office 365 is class-leading. I recommend Office 365 for businesses of all sizes who are looking for an enterprise grade mail and office suite.

Microsoft Office 365 has a number of different versions with different features, however they all provide a full mail and productivity suite, including Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Email, Calendaring, Database, Web Conferencing, Public Website, and Team storage.

Before you choose Office 365, here are the key things you need to know.

First, Support. Microsoft offer very high levels of support for Office 365, however it does vary based on your region, how much you pay, and who the service is provided through. Make sure you choose your Microsoft implementation partners carefully, and look at the level of support.

Second, class-leading data security. Microsoft have pulled out all of the stops with security - meeting ISO27001, FISMA, HIPAA BAA and the EU Model Clauses. The solution is independently audited and certified. We have reviewed Microsoft’s security controls, and they are absolutely world-class.

Third, consider support for different platforms. Office 365 works best with a full Microsoft environment - including desktops and browsers. If you are using other desktop or mobile environments, or different browsers, it is likely to work, but make sure you test the user experience and integration carefully.

Finally, I recommend reviewing what package of features you intend to roll out. Office 365 is a broad suite that includes many different components, many of which include good-or-better alternatives. You may want to consider alternative options for file storage, web hosting and intranet/collaboration tools.
