Review of Google Drive

March, 2013

Rating: 5/5

In a word, Google Drive is quality. I’m really impressed by this service - it’s secure, richly featured, and clearly one of the leaders for cloud storage (file synchronising and sharing). I recommend Google Drive, along with the rest of Google Apps, to enterprise customers.

Google Drive is a cloud storage solution for personal and business use. It allows you to synchronise files across your different devices, share with others, and get offline access. With Google Docs, it also gives you the capability to view and edit documents on-the-go, or over the web.

Before you choose Google Drive, here are the key things you need to know

First, Google have suffered a number of outages, which have been heavily publicised due to their size and industry profile. Some include September 2011, December 2012, March 2013, although there have been more smaller incidents. In these outages I was impressed at how Google has responded decisively and addressed the root cause of the issues. However, do have a look closely at the terms you’re agreeing to with Google - as they only provide minimal compensation in the case of problems.

Second, their product and quality of service. Google Drive is great to use. Google have been focusing on usability and design over the past 12 months, and we feel that this product suite works well. We’ve found lots of satisfied customers, and good quality 24x7 support.

Finally, industry best-practice security. Google Drive is compliant with my favourite standard, ISO27001, which is the international standard for Information Security. Be aware that your data is stored on the same systems, shared with other customers, and your data is sent over the Internet, and may cross different legal jurisdictions. For some people, this can be a scary thought - especially given the sensitive nature of email and documents typically stored on the service.

I recommend Google Drive for most businesses, large and small, as a great option for cloud storage.
